North Essex, Essex
A characterful market town on the River Colne, with a High Street full of history and growth planned.
Why Halstead
Halstead is a traditional market town with the River Colne running through its heart. Wool and weaving were its trades for centuries, and the Courtauld family left their mark: Townsford Mill, converted to a silk mill in 1825, now holds one of the largest antiques centres on the Essex and Suffolk border.
Around 13,900 people live here, and it's set to grow. Braintree District Council's draft Local Plan proposes at least 2,850 new homes south and north-east of the town, with a new link road, and earmarks land off the High Street for redevelopment with new homes and shops.
